Who’s Steering This Generation?

Generations stand for a meaning, a statement, a history with a nic-name. Millennial generation, people who are born in the early 1980’s through the early 2000’s, also known as generation (y). This generation has become self-centered and selfish. From what I have experienced personally, has aggravated me for a few years. I hadn’t quite grasped it until I did some research and added it up. This generation, millennial needs to change the direction its heading because it is going the wrong way. There are multiple reasons why and how this generation has become so self-absorbed then the previous one; from the difference in the lyrics of songs to the decrease of empathy in recent history.

Music has always been an inspiration throughout the generations. The beats and harmony have always moved people and the lyrics changed the way individuals thought. Researchers from the University of Kentucky, find that hit songs in the 1980’s were more likely to emphasize “happy togetherness.” For example, the song, “Ebony and Ivory” by, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. including, “Let’s all celebrate and have a good time” by Kool and the Gang. Today’s songs are more likely to be about one specific person: the singer. For example, “I’m bringing sexy back” by Justin Timberlake in 2006, Beyoncé excluded in how hot she looked while dancing, “Its Blazin, you watch me in amazement.” Also, Fergie, talked about her “Humps.” There’s been a decline from “we” and “us” and expression of positive emotions.

  2. I've never really thought about it that way, but now that I think about it some songs tend to do that.
